[LTO: Lancet] Reducing Non-HDL at Younger Age to Lower Risk of Heart Disease Later in Life

January 23, 2020

New research^ details a link between non-high density cholesterol levels (non-HDL cholesterol*) and long-term risk for cardiovascular disease in people as young as age 30.

Men under age 45 could reduce their risk of heart problems from:

- About 29% to 6%

While women in this age group could reduce their risk from:

- About 16% to 4%

^Fabian J. Brunner et al. Application of non-HDL cholesterol for population-based cardiovascular risk stratification: results from the Multinational Cardiovascular Risk Consortium. The Lancet. Available online at https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(19)32519-X/fulltext. Published December 3, 2019. Accessed January 9, 2020.

*Non-HDL cholesterol reflects all of the "lipoproteins" (lipid-carrying proteins) that are associated with a higher risk of heart disease, including low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL) called "bad cholesterol", very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) and intermediate density lipoprotein (IDL).

[MIMS] Point-of-care CRP testing helps curb antibiotic use for COPD exacerbations

July 17, 2019

Using point-of-care testing (POCT) of C-reactive protein (CRP) to guide antibiotic prescribing in primary care clinics led to reduced antibiotic use for acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) without compromising clinical outcomes, the PACE* study finds.

(*PACE: Point of care testing to target Antibiotics for COPD Exacerbation)

CRP is an acute-phase biomarker previously shown to predict response to antibiotics. According to guidance given to clinicians in the study, antibiotics are unlikely to be beneficial if CRP falls <20 mg/L, likely to be beneficial if CRP exceeds 40 mg/L.

[Hong Kong 01] Social workers refer to community-deficient patients with inadequate patient care planning

August 24, 2018

"There are social workers who are currently lacking community support for patients with advanced diseases. Medical assistance is especially low. The support for late patients depends on the elderly being connected to the community center. Otherwise, they should rely on volunteers and neighbors to report, and now they are on advanced patients. Support is not enough."
As a profession, we are convinced that if patients can live in the community and receive support in their care, including basic tests and pathological monitoring, they will have better care in their later years and enjoy their old age.
